SEGA Sammy have released their annual Integrated Report, which covers the current sales of their franchises up to the end of the financial year, March 2022. The report reveals that the Atlus-developed Persona franchise has sold approximately 15.5 million physical units and downloads. This figure does not include the recent Persona 5 Royal releases for Xbox Series consoles, PS5 or Steam, as they released just last week.
Almost half of these franchise sales come from the Persona 5 series which has sold 7.2 million units, 46.5% of Persona‘s total sales. Further, 77% of Persona 5 series sales came from outside of Japan, showing the rising global audience for the franchise. The Persona 5 series includes the original Persona 5, the rhythm game Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight, the expanded Persona 5 Royal and action spin-off Persona 5 Scramble: The Phantom Strikers.
The report on page 28 describes how Atlus plans to keep utilising its IP to their full potential. They stress the need to have their games on multiple platforms in different countries to build “a global fan base”. Remastering and porting older games that are already critically acclaimed is also part of Atlus’ plans to gain new fans for their games, seen by their upcoming ports of the remastered numbered Persona titles.
Profitability for SEGA Sammy’s IP like Persona is also attributed to their use in other non-gaming products. For example, the “multifaceted rollout” described on page 23 shows how the Persona brand is also used to sell movies, toys and pachislot/pachinko machines. With the franchise performing so well for SEGA Sammy, surely we’ll get Persona 6 soon. Right?
