Gamers are more than likely to be familiar with the infamous anti-piracy software known as Denuvo. The company behind the DRM software have recently announced that their latest development known as TraceMark will help video game developers stop vital information from leaking online – and they will also be able to track where those leaks came from.

While the Denuvo software seems by many in the industry to be a good thing, as it prevents games from being pirated, it is also quite the contentious subject among gamers for various reasons. While it is an anti-piracy software, Denuvo has also been outright blamed (with proof) of being incredibly taxing on a game’s performance, as seen with titles like Resident Evil Village. Despite the outcry from gamers, Denuvo is likely not leaving anytime soon, as parent company Irdeto has made Denuvo available for the Nintendo Switch as of 2023. This unfortunately means the software will be appearing on more than just PC titles, but it might come at the same cost to Switch titles in the form of performance issues.

TraceMark announced 2

Irdeto has also confirmed that their latest software, TraceMark, will allow developers to add an extra layer of security to certain game files in the form of distinctive and imperceptible IDs. Due to this new security measure and its unique design, developers will also be able to use them to track down leakers within the company. This is meant to hopefully prevent people from acquiring and sharing sensitive information. Currently, the software is not quite ready for release yet but we will most likely see it being implemented soon.

There’s no denying that software such as TraceMark will be beneficial to the gaming industry’s secret projects, which has recently seen several high-profile leaks from games such as Grand Theft Auto VI, Dragon Age 4, and most infamously, Marvel’s Wolverine, including other information in the massive Insomniac Games data leak. Let’s just hope that with TraceMark on the rise, we won’t see the same huge drops in performance similar to its sister software, Denuvo.
