It appears a lot of Destiny 2 players don’t know that they’re playing a worse version of the game, despite the free upgrade. In their latest This Week at Bungie update, the Destiny 2 developers have said they “noticed a notable number of PS5 players playing the PS4 version of Destiny 2 on their current-generation consoles”, providing them with linked instructions to update their game.
The PS5 version of Destiny 2 has considerably better textures, models, resolution, frame rates and 120Hz support in Crucible matches. A lot of PS5 owners are missing out on this next-gen goodness because they don’t know what version of the game they are playing, and the PS5’s handling of cross-gen titles doesn’t help. Sony’s next-gen upgrade system for the PlayStation is a lot less intuitive than Microsoft’s Smart Delivery for Xbox, with the latter just automatically downloading and playing the version of the game that corresponds with the console in use.
If you’re worried you’re playing the wrong version of Destiny 2, it’s very simple to check. Find the game on your PS5, select the ‘[…]’ button and then you can see which versions are available and which you have in use. If you’re still unsure, check out PlayStation’s extended instructions here.
Despite the last generation versions lagging behind the newer ones, the Bungie blog update makes clear that Destiny 2 is remaining a cross-gen title for the forseeable future. In preparation for the big upcoming Lightfall expansion, adjustments have been made to some textures to reduce their system memory use with minimal visual downgrades on last generation versions. Bungie says “this change will help us to keep creating new content on PS4, PS4 Pro, Xbox One, and Xbox One X.”
