In a move which has been expected for almost a month, Bungie has finally announced that their next expansion to Destiny 2, titled The Final Shape, will be released on June 4, 2024.
Bungie made the announcement on their website stating, “The Final Shape is the culmination of the first ten years of Destiny storytelling and, for Guardians everywhere, countless hours spent together. We want to honor that journey, so we’re taking the time we need to deliver an even bigger and bolder vision, one that we hope will be remembered and treasured for years to come.”
The post goes on to lay out the overall content release strategy for the next six months. Season 23, known as “Season of The Wish,” starts tomorrow and is reportedly slated to run its original course until February. After the end of the season, weekly “Wish” progression quests will be present alongside the usual Moments of Triumph. Guardian Games will occur in March, then a two-month long content update subtitled “Into The Light” will round out the gap until The Final Shape‘s release. The post also promises that three new PvP maps will be coming out in May as part of the “Into The Light” content.
Food For Thought
The only thing surprising about this particular delay is that it took so long for Bungie to say anything about it. Players have been expecting it. Other journalists and commentators with insider access have all but assured it. And yet, Bungie sat on its thumbs for a month without even an open acknowledgment that the expansion would be delayed. While one might argue a desire to avoid further bad press in the wake of their recent layoffs and revenue shortfall moved them to keep quiet, even a cursory notice of “this is going to be delayed, we’ll share the new date soon” would have been better than leaving the player base hanging. It’s difficult to see how this move will be greeted with any sort of enthusiasm.
