With Final Fantasy XVI set for release in June, fans are eagerly awaiting the next instalment in the epic franchise. However unlike it’s predecessors, Final Fantasy XVI will not include traditional difficulty settings.
We all know what to expect from Final Fantasy games – epic combat, interesting characters and amazing world-building. However, according to the Playstation Blog, Final Fantasy XVI will focus more on story and action as opposed to difficult mechanics. For Clara Hertzog who managed to not only play this title but also speak to its creators, she talks about the lack of difficulty options. “Perhaps one of the things I found most impressive and exciting about XVI’s combat system is how the title does away with difficulty settings”, Hertzog says. “No need to choose between easy, normal or hard at the beginning of your playthrough: you will have two options: action-focused or story-focused.”

She goes onto say that beyond these two options, the enemies are as formidable in the story-focused mode as they are in the action-based one. The only difference lies in the “particular set of accessories” granted to a player if they choose the story-focused option.
These accessories include abilities that allow you to customise your experience with Final Fantasy XVI. You can slow time in order to manoeuvre better or you can even summon animals (specifically Clive’s loyal canine companion) to fight alongside you or heal our protagonist if he is hurt. Furthermore, you have access to an ability that will automatically heal you whenever you are low on health as well as one that automatically dodges incoming attacks.
For fans who like a challenge and are disappointed with these options, fear not! A third difficulty option can be unlocked once you have beaten the game. Titled ‘Final Fantasy’, “the New Game+ mode will provide players with an extra challenge should they be up for it, not only increasing the strength of enemies but also their placement throughout the game as well as providing players with full-on different battles.”
