Light spoilers ahead for God of War Ragnarök, so be warned! If you’ve been playing God of War Ragnarök and started to wonder what the sequel would look like rendered on a PlayStation 2, you’re not alone – and someone on the internet has provided you with the answer.
Look no further than this eight minute clip from a prominent modder Speclizer, who has previously attracted attention online for their in-game discoveries on The Last Of Us Part II. On this occasion, the modder has been hard at work downgrading the characters in Santa Monica’s sequel into a rough-cut PS2 makeover.
The end result is pretty surprising, and a far throw from the next-gen beauty we received following Ragnarok’s PS5 release on Nov. 9. The character models bear the brunt of the downgrade, being nostalgically misshapen and blocky. In one scene, as Freya holds a sword to Kratos, half of her body is missing and her hair becomes shaven for a moment or two before reverting back to shoulder length again. Ah, the good old days.
Atreus is harshly affected by the downgrade, with the majority of his body missing during his cutscenes. The world environments are distorted and indistinguishable, a world away from the next-gen landscapes we’re accustomed to today. We’ve only got Speclizer to thank for this wonderful atrocity. In their other work, they have data-mined two scrapped cutscenes involving a boar hunt and a dance and revealed hidden animation tricks from The Last Of Us Part II.
