Nvidia Geforce Now Xbox Microsoft

Microsoft has announced a second 10-year Call of Duty deal has been signed, hours after the reveal of their Nintendo deal. This second contract is in partnership with Nvidia, and promises ten years of Call of Duty games making their way to Nvidia’s GeForce NOW cloud gaming service. Whilst Microsoft has not completed their acquisition of Activision Blizzard, this new partnership would be enforceable when, and if, Microsoft takes control of the company.

There is ongoing scrutiny from global competition authorities into Microsoft’s giant attempted acquisition, which would give them the rights to some of gaming’s biggest names, from Candy Crush to Call of Duty. One such example is the UK’s Competition and Markets authority, which began an additional phase of investigation into the deal as it criticizes the potential monopolizing effects of the acquisition.

The Call of Duty series would not be an Xbox Cloud Gaming exclusive under the new Nvidia partnership.

One of the biggest areas of concern is around cloud gaming, which makes today’s announcement of an Nvidia GeForce NOW partnership particularly important for Microsoft. The 10-year deal previously announced with Nintendo was already a big step, but a contract with Nvidia marks an even bigger step to address legal scrutiny. Microsoft’s acquisition is thought to be a particular threat to cloud gaming services, as the Xbox Game Cloud would have far more exclusive games through company acquisitions than any other service out there. This Nvidia GeForce Now partnership ensures to legislators that, for the next ten years at least, Call of Duty cannot be exclusive to Xbox Cloud Gaming.
