PlayStation 5 Reaches Two Million Sales In Japan

PlayStation 5 Console

Despite huge ongoing supply issues, the PlayStation 5 has crossed two million units sold in Japan. The data comes from the latest Famitsu sales chart, and combines the 1.75 million PS5 sales with the 275,000 PS5 Digital Edition sales, bringing the PS5 family of consoles over two million. We’ve also reported on Famitsu’s weekly game charts, which you can find here.

The supply issues for the PS5 have been troubling for Sony in Japan. Despite PlayStation’s market dominance, there was a week in June when the Xbox Series line sold far more consoles than the PS5 due to the constraints on the production and supply of new consoles. Despite it struggling to get into the hands of Japanese gamers, the PS5 is steadily rising in sales as more become available to purchase.

Demand for Sony’s PS5 will rise significantly with the wave of exclusive releases next year, such as Final Fantasy XVI.

Nintendo Had Another Quarter Of Massive Sales

November 9, 2022

The PS5’s Digital Edition has sold significantly less than the default version of the console. The standard PS5 with a disk drive has sold more than six times more units than the Digital Edition, showing customer hesitation in Japan to commit to a fully digital library. As an interesting aside, we recently reported 91.5% of Capcom’s recent sales were digital, as shared in their financial reports we break down here.

Availability of the PS5 in Japan is expected to ramp up significantly heading into 2023. Massive JRPG titles like Final Fantasy XVI and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will be PS5 exclusives slated for release in the next financial year, and will have huge demand in Japan based on past Final Fantasy sales numbers. Another big release coming next year is Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, with the first game debuting at the top spot of the Famitsu sales chart back in September 2018.

Have you managed to get a PS5 yet? Which titles are you looking forward to the most? Let us know in the comments below, and keep your eyes on GameLuster for more gaming news.
